Patient Care at Jospice

Jospice opened at Thornton in March 1974. During this time we have cared for thousands of people and their families.

We provide 24 hour in-patient care with particular expertise in caring for long term degenerative or disabling conditions as well as end of life care. Our care demands time and our staffing levels mean our staff have it. We strongly believe that the model of care we have offers a proven high quality way of meeting the aspirations and the expressed wish of many patients and their relatives.

The woodlands surrounding the site help to create a wonderful atmosphere of sanctuary and peace a comforting mix of professional care, reassurance and tenderness.

Complimentary Therapy
Complementary therapies have a positive role to play in managing fatigue and anxiety at the end of life: Aromatherapy and massage are used alongside conventional medicine to help treat nausea, promote relaxation, and improve quality of life, particularly in palliative care.

Providing a support service for patients, relatives and staff working with:
• Individuals
• Telephone calls
• Groups

There are also several services each year at Thornton when family and friends are invited to remember those who have died in the previous year.

Reflexology helps to improve physical and psychological well being of palliative care patients. Foot massage also has a significant immediate effect on pain, nausea and vomiting, and relaxation.

Staffing
Our care is nurse-led and our nurses and care assistants develop specialised skills through training and experience. We provide the wider support essential in offering end-of-life care: most of our patients transfer to the care of local G.Ps. who have a special interest in palliative care, our patients receives bereavement support, chaplaincy, and complementary therapy. Who all work closely with our catering, laundry and domestic staff ensuring that the patients and their families needs are central to all we do.

Mission Statement
We provide 24-hour in-patient nursing or palliative care for adults. We have particular expertise in caring for terminally ill patients and people with long-term degenerative or disabling conditions.

We have a special concern for patients who do not require hospital treatment but who, for whatever reason, cannot be nursed at home. We also offer respite care to help terminally ill patients and their carers.

We seek to provide high quality professional care, led by skilled nurses, in a welcoming, homely, informal and peaceful environment. Our aim is to enable patients to feel at ease and comfortable, and to give them as much control as possible of how they live and how their condition is managed.

We aim to care, welcome and support not only the patient but also their families and carers, and to involve them in the life of Jospice and the care of the patient. We recognise and respond to the combination of physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient, and give special attention to those who we accompany through the last stages of their lives.
The emphasis here at St Joseph's is to try and provide a caring environment with as homely an atmosphere as is possible. We are here to meet your needs, not for you to fit into our routine!
